Red Ribbon Week
Dear Matheson Park families and community, The Red Ribbon Week is scheduled for October 23rd through October 31st, 2007. Here at Matheson Park we have many exciting activities planned for the week of October 22nd through 26th.
Our theme for this year is:
DRUG FREE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES BEGIN WITH ME
Here is the schedule of events for the week. Please discuss it with your children and if possible, find some time to participate in the activities at home and school. It is really helpful for your children to have their families involved in their education about and prevention of drug use. On Tuesday, our main activity is:
LET’S GET OUR FAMILIES INVOLVED DAY Your child will need your help as a whole family to complete their assignment. Please remind them to wear something red and their red ribbon every day.

MONDAY, 10/22/07 Kick-Off Assembly introducing McGruff, The Crime Dog. Red ribbons will be distributed among all the students to wear throughout the week. Students will write a pledge for ways to keep our school community healthy and drug free. Social Skills classes will focus on self care and healthy living practices. Please ask your children about the day’s activities and have discussions about their pledge and it’s meaning to your family.
TUESDAY, 10/23/07 Drug Free and Healthy living pledges will be read during the morning announcements.Students will bring home 5/5 cards to be used as patches of a quilt for their classroom. Families will decorate the cards or write ideas about ways to create drug free communities starting with their homes. Please address our theme for the year;
DRUG FREE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES BEGIN WITH ME.These cards should be returned to the teacher on Wed. Ms. Shirazi will distribute red tulip bulbs for all the students in each class to be planted in a designated spot on the school grounds. Remind your child to wear something red and their red ribbons.
WEDNESDAY, 10/24/07 Classes will create a quilt using the 5/5 cards decorated at home. It will be displayed on the classroom door. Remember red ribbons and something red to wear.
THURSDAY, 10/25/07 Remember to wear red ribbons and something red. Social skills classes will focus on writing messages about ways to create Healthy and Drug Free Communities. These messages will be read during the morning and after noon announcements.
FRIDAY, 10/26/07 Today is planting day. Every one of the classes will be planting their bulbs in the designated areas. Parents and other family members, please feel free to come and help with your child’s class if it is possible for you to do so.
LIVE HEALTHY, MAKE OUR COMMUNITY BEATIFUL AND MOST OF ALL, HAVE LOTS OF FUN. REMEMBER, IT ALL BEGINS WITH YOU!!
